Will The Swiss Model Be A Game-Changer For The 2024 Session Champions League?

European football will be experiencing an unexpected turn in the format during 2024-25 Champions League sessions. That year the clubs will be following a different format altogether. The UEFA (ยูฟ่า, term in Thai) disclosed it in recent news about the format. This new format, also known as the ‘Swiss Model’ is expected to revamp the concept, by introducing 4 more clubs in the tally.

Clubs playing in a new format

Now, the Champions League will be played between 36 clubs, and not 32. Also, the grouping will be done differently. The matches will be organized in a new format, while each team will be playing 10 matches, equally divided in home and away format.

All new dramatic scenes

The Champions League will now be bigger, as the total number of matches will double up in the new Swiss format. The ranking will be given to the teams according to the home and away matches. The more the matches, the more is the revenue and the broadcasting partners will be looking ahead to grab that opportunity. However, experts think that this will create some clash between the dates in domestic leagues. For instance, England, which holds the premier league with 20 teams and several domestic cups, will have to smartly adjust the dates with the Champions League. Needless to say, clubs, especially the bigger clubs, will be keener to be a part of the Champions League.

The burden on the players

Though clubs and sponsors will be benefitting from the new league structure, here lies a deep question. Will this structure benefit the players too? A lot of players are thinking that with more matches, it will be difficult to cope up with the scheduled calendars and will be a burden on them.

How the Swiss model change the League arrangement

Instead of breaking the clubs into eight groups, the Swiss model will keep all the clubs under a single table. It’s just like the chess tournament, while the only difference is that the clubs will know the schedule beforehand. CONCACAF Nations League follows the same process to adjust a large number of teams under one table.

How different will be the Champions league from now?

Fans will be introduced to a new format with more games per session. 2024-25 will have four new clubs, which will get entry according to the rules set by UEFA. The latest revamp was much needed to bring some spark in the league. The European League is considered the most widespread league, where more than 1000 clubs from 30 different countries will fight to get placed on the table. However, besides, putting pressure on the calendar, this economically driven proposal, might create an adverse effect on the domestic clubs.

Two-third majorities are needed to pass such a constitution. Now it will be interesting to see how this money game plays an important role in the League. Now, it’s time to sit and watch how the influence of big clubs revamps the idea while keeping the value of domestic leagues intact.
